Ex-PM David Cameron ‘Tried to Get Daily Mail Editor Sacked’

Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron reportedly attempted to have the editor of the Daily Mail sacked in the run-up to last year’s Brexit vote due to the publication’s stance on Britain’s departure from the European Union.

It’s well-founded the Mail ran a vocal campaign in support of Brexit before the Yes vote won. BBC Newsnight reported Daily Mail proprietor Lord Rothermere informed his Brexit editor, Paul Dacre, of Cameron’s intention to have him “reined in” before suggesting he fire him.

It’s also said Cameron pleaded with Dacre to “cut him some slack” during a private meeting at his No. 10 Downing Street apartment on February 2, 2016, although a statement from the former PM’s camp said he “did not believe he could determine who edits the Daily Mail.”

Lord Rothermere reportedly neglected to tell Dacre of the pressure being placed upon him by Cameron until, July, when the Brexit result was announced.
