Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg has revealed Fernando Alonso was his pick to succeed him at the Mercedes helm after leaving the manufacturer at the climax of a title-winning 2016 season.
Speaking to a Spanish newspaper, Rosberg admitted the move may not have worked for “the team,” but said veteran Alonso still had his backing as the man to partner Lewis Hamilton:
“Everyone says Alonso and I say it too because there would be fireworks with Hamilton. As a fan, it would be nice, but for the team it wouldn’t work. They’ve found a great solution. Bottas is fast and though Hamilton will be at a very, very high level and it will be difficult to beat him, I have proved that he can.”
As Rosberg suggested, Valtteri Bottas is the driver who’s been given the green light to partner Hamilton for the 2017 Formula One season, although he faces a massive task in filling the German’s shoes.
