New Zealand may be the favourites to beat the British and Irish Lions when the latter make their way Down Under on this summer’s tour, but the odds have fallen in favour of Warren Gatland’s side following Wednesday’s squad announcement.
Sam Warburton was confirmed as captain for the European outfit while England stars Dylan Hartley and Joe Launchbury were among the big omissions in a 41-man lineup that included just two Scotland internationals—full-back Stuart Hogg and winger Tommy Seymour.
Before Wednesday’s press conference, the All Blacks were picked as 2/7 (1.29) frontrunners to send the Lions packing with a series victory, compared to the slightly less favourable 1/3 (1.33) they found themselves afterward. The biggest movement came from the travelling team, however, as Gatland’s men surged from 7/2 (4.50) outsiders to 12/5 (3.40) underdogs, showing a boost in support for the Lions from those backing.
