Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will come face to face with Gennady Golovkin in September after he demolished countryman Julio Chavez Jr. via unanimous decision on Saturday evening.
The Mexican maestro beat Chavez Jr. 120-108 on all three judges’ cards to set up a dream fixture opposite WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight champion Golovkin, who was sat ringside for the eliminator bout.
And it’s the Kazakh star who is an unsurprising 4/7 (1.57) favourite to take Alvarez’s WBO light-middleweight and add to his collection, while his challenger has been installed at 6/4 (2.50) to come out on top come September 16.
Golovkin has never suffered defeat in his 37-fight career, while Canelo’s only blemish came in the form of a loss to retired legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez is listed at a whopping 8/1 (9.00) to beat his upcoming via KO or TKO—evidence as to just how unlikely it is the Kazakh is stopped—while Golovkin is only 5/4 (2.25) to dish the same fate to his foe.
