Sam Warburton has dented his chances of featuring in the British and Irish Lions’ Test opener against New Zealand in just under a fortnight after admitting his injury is holding him back as things stand.
Ir’s been confirmed the Cardiff Blues star will return to lead the Lions against the Highlanders on Tuesday, but Warburton conceded it may not be sufficient time to prove his credentials ahead of the curtain raiser against the All Blacks on June 24:
“If I play Tuesday and I still feel I’m a bit undercut, then I might not be ready for that first Test. Maybe that would be the situation, or maybe I could have a blinder on Tuesday and feel absolutely fine so we’ll see how it goes really.”
Warburton is captaining the Lions for the second time in his career, although this will be his first time doing so in New Zealand.
The Lions have three more games until they open their three-legged series against the reigning world champions, and Warburton would be a welcome addition to the lineup if he can prove his fitness.
