Manchester United’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann appears to be done for this summer after it was confirmed the player has signed a new contract extension in the Spanish capital.
Atleti announced on Tuesday that Griezmann’s deal at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium had been prolonged by one year to 2022, although his release clause remains valued at €100 million (£88 million).
That’s a major push in the odds compared to the start of June, when it was reported Griezmann had agreed a deal to move to Old Trafford this summer, cutting his odds of a Manchester United move down as far as 1/5 (1.20).
Upon announcing his decision to extend his tenure with Atletico, Griezmann said: “The first thing I want to do is apologise to people who misunderstood my statement. Since I have arrived, I have given everything for my club, my colleagues and my coaching staff.”
