McLaren’s Formula One Chances Rocked Following Engine Penalties in Azerbaijan

As if McLaren’s 2017 Formula One season didn’t seem as though it could get any bleaker, it’s been confirmed drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne will start Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the back of the grid.

Both drivers are yet to take a single point from the campaign thus far following a long list of engine faults, alterations and upgrades, the latest of which has resulted in the pair being pushed to the back of the queue in Baku.

McLaren will upgrade their Honda engines for Sunday’s race, with Alonso incurring penalties totalling 15 places, while Vandoorne’s tally is 30 due to the fact his power unit will also be changed after Friday practice.

Speaking on the matter following Thursday’s practice, Alonso said: “We try to go through the weekend in the best way possible, perform the best we can but there are some things out of our control. It will be like this all season long. We used already the maximum engines that we are allowed in the first seven races and now we will start last in a couple of other races. That will make things even more difficult but it is the way it is and we can’t do anything other than perform at our best.”
