South Africa have suffered a setback in their preparation for Thursday’s first Test against hosts England after it was confirmed team captain Faf du Pleases will miss the fixture for personal reasons.
Du Plessis flew home to attend the birth of his first child but will not return to the United Kingdom in time for the opening match at Lord’s as team manager Mohammed Moosajee said: “The difficult nature of the delivery has delayed his return to the UK.”
That alteration means Dean Elgar is set to take over in the role of captain, while Theunis de Bruyn or potential debutant Aiden Markram are expected to take Du Plessis’ place in the squad.
While the visitors endure some heartache in their captaincy, England’s Joe Root is set to lead his team after being named to the position, and the home outfit are priced at evens (2.00) to triumph on Thursday.
