Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has indicated Reds talisman Philippe Coutinho would have to create “war” in order to leave Anfield this summer, with Barcelona circling his signature as a supposed replacement for Neymar.
Coutinho stands as the most valuable piece of Liverpool’s puzzle, yet despite manager Jurgen Klopp’s reiterations the player is not for sale, Barca are reported to have agreed a €90 million (£81.6 million) deal to recruit the Brazilian and are now 1/2 (1.50) favourites with Bet Fred to sign the player.
Neymar moved to Parsi Saint-Germain last week in a world-record €222 million (£200 million) move, leaving the Blaugrana with plenty of funds and roughly three weeks to land his left-wing successor.
But Gerrard indicated Liverpool’s stance on the player remains resolute, and it would have to be Coutinho himself who forced an exit if it is to go through, telling BT Sport:
“The good thing from the Liverpool fans’ point of view is the manager is desperate to keep hold of him and is trying everything to keep hold of him,” he said in his role as a BT Sport pundit after the UEFA Super Cup.
“The owners want him to stay. This is not a situation where Liverpool need money or to cash in. We’re not a selling club so they’re gonna do everything in their power for him to stay.
“But at the end of the day it comes down to Philippe Coutinho and his decision and what he’s prepared to do, what type of war he’s prepared to create to get out, because Liverpool won’t make it easy for him.”
