The Olympic sport pool looks ready to expand further into the field of technology following reports that eSports could become a part of the program in time for the 2024 Paris Summer Games.
According to Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic bid committee, eSports representatives and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will both be approached regarding the possibility of gaming entering the list of approved Olympic events.
Betfair are one of the few bookmakers that offers betting markets on games such as FIFA, Data 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends, meaning they could be ahead of the curve in reacting to the potential for Olympic winnings.
Estanguet recently told the Associates Press:
“We have to look at it because we can’t say, ‘It’s not us. It’s not about Olympics.’ The youth, yes they are interested in esports and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges.
“I don’t want to say ‘no’ from the beginning. I think it’s interesting to interact with the IOC, with them, the esports family, to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success.”
