Alexander Zverev continues to sew history in the tennis annals and could be in line for further success after Roger Federer’s withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters saw him become second-favourite for the title.
Rafael Nadal is still the chief favourite to take top spot and can be found at 19/10 (2.90) with Betfair, but German wonderkid Zverev can be found following up behind at 7/2 (4.50).
That’s compared to the much higher 17/2 (9.50) price placed on the more experienced Dominic Thiem, while Milos Raonic, who was not long ago consider a major force at the top level, is listed at 17/1 (18.00).
Zverev, 20, will begin his Cincinnati campaign in the second round after beating Federer 6-3 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final to claim his second Masters 1000 title and reiterate his status as inarguably the most promising prospect in men’s tennis.
That triumph gave Zverev his fifth trophy of 2017 thus far and meant he became just the third player to best Federer this year.
