British cyclist Chris Froome holds a two-second lead at the top of the 2017 Vuelta a Espana general classification after he finished third in the third stage on Monday.
Vincenzo Nibali won stage two with an acutely timed dash for the finish line at Andorra la Vella, but Froome’s narrow close behind was enough to see him take the red jersey early on in the competition.
Froome is looking to become the first rider in 39 years to win both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana in the same year, Frenchmen Bernard Hinault having become just the second to do so in 1978.
The Briton is already at odds as low as 4/7 (1.57) to win this year’s Vuelta with Betway, and second-favourite Nibali is more than three times the price at 4/1 (5.00), showing just how firm the faith in Froome is.
