A 4-0 hammering of Malta on Friday evening hasn’t improved England’s chances of winning the 2018 World Cup, while France have enjoyed a boost in the stakes following their own 4-0 demolition of the Netherlands.
Despite the flattering scoreline, England were far from impressive in their trip to Malta and scored three of their four goals in the final 10 minutes of the match, having gone in at the break scoreless.
As a result, they remain at long odds of 20/1 (21.00) to win the international showcase in Russia next year, with reigning world champions Germany still top of the order at 11/2 (6.50).
France, however, are in the ascendancy and have moved into second-favourite status at odds of 6/1 (7.00) after their one-sided thumping of the Dutch on Thursday.
Prior to that result, Les Bleus were level with Brazil at a price of 13/2 (7.50), but their most recent result appears to have convinced bookmakers they’ll be contending for the 2018 prize.
