Rafael Nadal will face South African Kevin Anderson in the final of the 2017 U.S. Open after he beat Juan Martin Del Potro 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 in the competition’s second semi-final.
Following a string of injuries and withdrawals from some of the top men’s stars, Anderson beat Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 to book his maiden appearance in a Grand Slam final at the age of 31.
Prior to this year’s tournament in New York, Anderson’s previous best performance at a major was his quarter-final appearance at the 2015 U.S. Open, although he’s been slated as a massive underdog to beat Nadal and is priced at 5/1 (6.00) with Betfair.
The Spanish frontrunner is seeking his third U.S. Open crown and his 16 Grand Slam win overall, listed as a heavy 13/100 (1.13) favourite for the top prize on Sunday.
Speaking after his win over Argentinian Del Potro, Nadal said: “It means a lot. It has been an amazing season of course after a couple with injures and troubles. To be back here in front of this amazing crowd, on this amazing court, and to have the chance to fight for another title is so important to me.”
