England’s next women’s national team manager should be female, according to all-time record goalscorer Kelly Smith, who has ruled herself out of succeeding Mark Sampson in the role.
Sampson was relieved of his duties as England women head coach after details of “inappropriate and unacceptable” behaviour in his previous role as Bristol Academy manager came to light.
Smith scored 46 goals in 117 appearances for the Lionesses and said: “I think they’ll take their time on getting the right person, they can’t be hasty. I’d like to see a female take over, but we’ll have to see what happens.”
Manchester City coach Nick Cushing is now a 5/4 (2.25) favourite to replace Sampson after Brent Hills was initially listed as a 2/1 (3.00) frontrunner by Sky Bet, although the latter has now slipped to 12/1 (13.00).
Meanwhile, England under-17s coach John Griffiths is also in the mix as a 3/1 (4.00) shot alongside Marieanne Spacey, who served as assistant to Sampson before moving to a player development role in June.
