Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took the next step toward winning this year’s Formula One drivers’ championship after finishing second to Max Verstappen in Sunday’s Malaysia Grand Prix.
The Briton started in pole position but failed to collect what would have been his fourth successive victory after a superb drive from Red Bull superstar Verstappen saw him take top spot on the podium.
Hamilton is now priced at an even slimmer 1/9 (1.11) with Ladbrokes to take this year’s crown, and despite his impressive fourth-place finish after starting at the back of the grid, Sebastian Vettel now sits 34 points off the leader with only five races left in the season.
As a result, Vettel has fallen from odds of 4/1 (5.00) after the Singapore Grand Prix down to 6/1 (7.00) just a fortnight later, having also lost points in that previous race following a collision.
The title’s destination looks all but decided as Hamilton seeks to keep the crown with Mercedes, while Ferrari watch as their chances for silverware diminish.
