Boxing legend Evander Holyfield has given British icon Anthony Joshua “the edge” over American boxing rival Deontay Wilder in the event the two clash in the ring, as has long been predicted.
The two heavyweights have been on a collision course for several years now, and as “AJ” emerges as a genuine force on the world circuit, anticipation is inevitably building toward a potential bout.
Joshua must defeat Kubrat Pulev in a defence of his WBA ‘super’ and IBF heavyweight titles on October 28 if he’s to stage such a fight, and Holyfield touted the Briton as the favourite if the pair did collide.
He told BoxingScene.com (h/t Sky Sports): “I do think Joshua does has the edge. Because he’s the more complete fighter, but it all depends upon how they fight on the night. You are only as good as your last fight.”
Joshua, 27, is undefeated in 19 professional fights since 2013, while Wilder has successfully defended his WBC heavyweight title on five occasions.
No date is set for a fight that’s purely concept right now, but Ladbrokes nonetheless have Joshua listed as a 1/3 (1.33) favourite for when they do meet, while Wilder sits as a dark horse at 9/4 (3.25).
