The shortlist for the 2017 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony has been announced, and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is unsurprisingly the overwhelming frontrunner to clinch his second such gong in succession.
The Portugal captain is a runaway 1/33 (1.03) favourite to add another individual prize to his trophy cabinet after leading Real to a European and domestic double in 2017.
He’s tipped to beat 14/1 (15.00) second-favourite Lionel Messi and 33/1 (34.00) dark horse Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Juventus and Italy goalkeeper who’s set to retire at the end of this season.
Ronaldo already has four Ballon d’Or awards to his name while Messi edges him in that regard with five, a figure the Los Blancos man is on target to match later this year.
It once again looks like a two-horse race for the prize considering Paris Saint-Germain talisman Neymar—who became the most expensive player of all time when he joined for £200 million from Barcelona this past summer—sits out at 50/1 (51.00).
Lower down the pecking order, Premier League players Harry Kane, Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard are all listed as 100/1 (101.00) longshots to win the Ballon d’Or, while Gareth Bale failed to make the final cut.
