Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has opened up on the contract situations surrounding rebel pair Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil and conceded “it’s possible” either or both players could be sold during the January transfer window.
Sanchez and Ozil will each see their contracts expire at the end of this season as things stand, at which point they would be able to leave the Gunners for free.
Wenger agreed it was his understanding that reports of Ozil’s agent advancing “positively” in talks with the club were true, but when quizzed on whether the pair could depart the Emirates Stadium in the winter, he replied:
“Both players look happy and overall I hope the situation can be turned round, but at the moment we are not close enough to announce anything. Talks are going well.
“Once you are in our kind of situation you have envisaged every solution, yes. It’s possible.”
Manchester City reportedly could have landed Sanchez over the summer had they agreed to send Raheem Sterling in the opposite direction, and the Citizens are still favourites to sign the Chilean in January, topping the order of suitors at 6/4 (2.50) with Sky Bet.
Foreign powerhouses Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are distant runners-up at respective odds of 5/1 (6.00) and 8/1 (9.00), although Arsenal are still slim favourites to hang onto their man past the winter window at 4/6 (1.67).
