Karolina Pliskova has made a substantial rise in the running to win this year’s WTA Finals after defeating Venus Williams 6-2, 6-2 in her opening match of the competition.
The 25-year-old needed a little more than an hour to sweep veteran Williams, 37, aside in straight sets, and she now sits as a 3/1 (4.00) third-favourite to win the tournament after moving to the top of the White Group.
Williams, on the other hand, fell drastically in the stakes as a result of her opening loss and is the highest price of any of the eight competitors, slipping to 59/5 (12.80) after entering her match with Pliskova at odds as low as 7/2 (4.50) with Betfair.
Garbine Muguruza came into the 2017 WTA Finals as favourite to clinch the crown and remains in the driving seat after she beat French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-4. The Spaniard made a slight move up in the odds and is now listed at 27/10 (3.70) to triumph.
