Wales’ 2017 Rugby League World Cup campaign got off to a nightmarish start on Saturday after a David Mead hat-trick helped Papua New Guineas ravage John Kear’s side 50-6.
Papua New Guinea are one of the three co-hosts in the 2017 tournament, and they ensured Wales’ 17-year wait for a victory at the World Cup endured.
Ireland are the only team left in Group C who are yet to play a match, and only the winner of the pool will advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Speaking to the media after Wales’ opening defeat, Kear said: “I didn’t think we performed well in any aspect. It’s been a very harsh lesson.”
Papua New Guinea were barely even offered odds prior to their tournament opener but moved to odds of 66/1 (67.00) with Ladbrokes after the win, having previously been lumped out at 150/1 (151.00). Wales, meanwhile, are at all but impossible odds of 1000/1 (1001.00).
