Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has become the club’s highest-paid player after signing a new five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2022.
BBC Sport confirmed the Brazilian’s new deal is worth roughly £150,000 per week, evidence as to just how important the puppeteer has been to the Reds since arriving from Inter Milan for a figure of £8.5 million in January 2013.
The 24-year-old was sorely missed from Liverpool’s starting lineup in recent weeks after sustaining an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for almost two months. Speaking to the club’s official website, Coutinho said:
“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me. It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.”
