Tom Dumoulin has lost his favourite status at the head of the Giro d’Italia 2017 queue after an untimely toilet break in Tuesday’s outing saw the Dutchman lose considerable ground in his bid to retain the maglia rosa.
Stage 16 featured three first category climbs and Dumoulin lost around a minute of time off his general classification lead after stopping close to the start of the third and final peak, allowing Nairo Quintana to steal in as the new 10/11 (1.91) frontrunner.
It was controversial to see the remaining riders refuse to wait for their rival as is usually the case, and Vincenzo Nibali stormed in for a sprint finish victory and ascended to third in the classification, improving his chances of taking the pink jersey in the meantime.
Despite expressing anger at seeing his lead cut down to just 31 seconds ahead of Stage 17, Dumoulin was calm in his response after the race: “A day to quickly forget! Good legs, but very disappointed that I lost two minutes because nature called. It was not the moment or the time in the race anymore to come to a complete shutdown because nature called me.”
