A series of high-profile departures from the 2017 U.S. Open has surprised the women’s competition after defending champion Angelique Kerber became the latest hotshot to bow out in the first round.
The German lost 6-3 6-1 to Japanese starlet Naomi Osaka, while Simona Halep and rising British star Johanna Konta were also among the bigger names to leave the tournament in the opening stage.
Garbine Muguruza, meanwhile, has maintained her spot as the top contender to win the New York title, except her odds have been sliced in half following the departures of numerous fellow frontrunners.
The Spaniard entered the 2017 U.S. Open at a price of 6/1 (7.00), but with heavyweights such as Konta, Halep and former world No. 1 Kerber all falling by the wayside, her path now looks much clearer.
Maria Sharapova beat Halep in her opening fixture and is a narrow second-favourite to beat Muguruza to the crown, currently listed at 7/1 (8.00) for a 2017 U.S. Open win.
