UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has sent the mixed martial arts world into a frenzy after posting a cryptic tweet that could suggest interim titleholder Tony Ferguson will be his next opponent.
McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon since he beat Eddie Alvarez to take the UFC lightweight belt at UFC 205 in November 2016, having since lost to boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in one of the most talked-about fights ever.
But an MMA return could be in sight after The Notorious posted a Grand Theft Auto art style depiction of himself to his Twitter with the caption reading simply: “Tony.”
McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, responded to the post and said: “Here we go…” That could be taken to suggest the preparations are beginning once again.
Ferguson recently defeated Kevin Lee via submission at UFC 216 to claim the UFC interim lightweight strap, and UFC president Dana White has previously said their fight “has to happen.”
